CS George Magoha Speaks On Abolishment Of Boarding Schools

Date:

Education CS George Magoha  has disagreed with proposals pushing for the abolishment of boarding schools in the country.

The CS who spoke during the inspection of construction of classrooms at Muturi Girls High School in Kirinyaga Central on Wednesday, January 12, said that boarding schools are among the best managed schools in Kenya.

Magoha asked those pushing for the agenda to reconsider that and said that the ministry of education will come up with new ways to curb the rising cases of indiscipline in such schools.

“Why would one imagine that we want to dismantle boarding schools? It doesn’t make sense. Mine is to see we have to remain firm. With those few schools where students have defeated their parents at home and they are bringing that rowdy attitude in schools we should be able to deal with them,” Magoha said.

According to him, instead of abolishing boarding schools, approved boarding schools should be introduced to handle the rowdy students.

“Perhaps rather than abolishing boarding schools, we should get approved boarding schools which will deal with these kinds of activities firmly,” the CS said.

Kenya Primary Schools Headteachers Association (KePSHA) advised the government to scrap off boarding schools saying that the move will solve cases of unrest.

“KEPSHA proposes that secondary schools become day schools so that parents are involved in raising their children. We will collaborate with the Kenya National Parents’ Association to promote strong partnership, coordination, and parental engagement to help children’s re-entry to schools and 100 percent transition from primary to secondary,” the headteachers said in a statement during the December 2021 conference in Mombasa.

Magoha will be in Ugunja, Siaya county on Thursday to commission the first complete classroom.
