Kentucky Fried Chicken (KFC) Kenyan outlet announced that it had run out of potatoes therefore there will be no chips for some time.
According to a social media post, KFC said that they had run out of potatoes because of the high orders of chips that they received during the December holiday season.
In the meantime, the food store has offered customers alternatives such as Coca Cola, ugali, buns etc to accompany the fried chicken as they work towards solving the issue.
“Fam it was truly a Furaha December. Mlikula sherehe with your KFC faves. Ya’ll loved our chips a little too much, and we’ve run out. Sorry! Our team is working hard to resolve the issue. In the meantime here are some SWAP options for combo meals if you are craving our Kuku,” KFC said.
Kenyans however do not understand why KFC is having a shortage of potatoes yet there are many suppliers of the commodity within the country while others have promised to boycott their foodstuffs for failing to promote local farmers.
“But why can’t you buy potatoes locally, I can supply you a bag at 3250/- DM I get you the same on Wednesday. You don’t need to bring potatoes from another country,” a social media user raised his concern
KFC however is said to be using a variety of potato that is not available in the country hence the need to import.
“Do you have the variety of the potatoes that they sell? They told us they use a certain type, can’t remember which one,” another one responded.
It is alleged that the food store can not purchase potatoes from local farmers because they have not undergone a global Quality Assurance process.
“Ati “The reason we cannot buy local at the moment is all suppliers need to go through the global QA approval process and we cannot bypass that even if we run out to ensure that our food is safe for consumption by our customers” – The CEO, KFC,” NduatiI said on twitter.
Another follower asked whether they would be selling Ugali with soup but to his disappointment KFC said that there is no soup in the meantime.
