The news of huge fires engulfing business premises within Nairobi’s popular Gikomba market is no longer shocking to the ear for those who have been around.
In the wee hours of Sunday morning, sections of Gikomba market went down the ashes following an outbreak of fire.
According to Sonko News reporters on the ground, many Gikomba traders who had arrived to do business made efforts in a bid to rescue some of their goods.
Being the fifth fire in a period of two months, Kenyans questioned who exactly was behind the Gikomba market fires that have left traders poorer.
It is yet a mystery as to why all the fire incidents that have been witnessed in the busy market do happen at night, and more so at dawn time.
On 20th October this year, fire razed down property of unknown value at the famous Gikomba market, which is situated on the east side of the heart of Nairobi town.
The inferno, that its cause wasn’t established, started on the Southern part of the open-air market, opposite the Jua Kali section and adjacent to Muthurwa Primary School, located in Pumwani.
So serious was the fire incident that it left helpless eyewitnesses just looking without doing anything.
Kamukunji Member of Parliament Hon. Yusuf Hajji broke the news of the dawn inferno and expressed disappointment that it was becoming a perennial thing that traders would be losing their property under unclear circumstances.
In the meantime, the Sunday morning Gikomba market fire elicited mixed reactions with Kenyans having the following to say:
“Why doesn’t this fire happen in other towns or big markets am sure poor hustlers will lose the battle and pave way for them to occupy. Simple language leave Gikomba now.”
Buy you rigged the elections and brought in your own leader who cares not about the interests of kiambaa people.”
“Doesnt that mean the fire was triggered by someone.may be the fire could have been put off using we chemical extinguisher or other appropriate method.may be they used chemical to start fire.bcz rain is normaly effective.”
“The government said that they are planning to demolish gikomba market labda wanajua.”
“Jubilee deep state want to grab prime plots in nairobi before there time is over also removal of sonko.”
“The work of “System” till businessmen & women vacate or else this will continue till end of world.”
“Land grabbers are not sleeping using all means to get entry into Gikomba, they even got a court order to push away traders from Gikomba. Remember way back in Eastleigh what happened to KBS bus park which was formerly owned by City council, what happened to Eastleigh Chiefs Camp?”
