DP Ruto Refutes Claims Of Engaging In 2022 Elections Campaigns

Date:

Deputy president William Ruto has refuted claims that he has began his campaigns for the 2022 general elections.

The second in command said that his tours across the country are not campaigns but part of his work as a government official.

Ruto who was speaking at his official Karen residence said that his nationwide tours are meant for getting feedback about government projects from citizens.

“I haven’t started the campaign because the campaign period is not yet announced by IEBC,” he said.

DP Ruto said that he is waiting for IEBC to give a greenlight on when the campaigns for the next general elections should commence.

“What you have see me do is to do my mandate; speaking to people, understanding their issues, assessing the extent of our government programs,” he claimed.

“Feedback from the public constitutes public participation and it is a constitutional provision, so when you see me in various parts of the country, it is because I am the deputy president and we have government projects all over the country,” he added.

Moments after his speech, DP Ruto toured Narok County where he spoke about the 2022 elections.

This comes just days after IEBC chairperson Wafula Chebukati raised concerns on the ongoing early political campaigns.

Through a statement on Friday, Chebukati said that some aspirants have intensified their campaigns outside the legally stipulated period.

According to Chebukati, such early campaigns are undesirable and may upset the political environment in the lead-up to the upcoming general elections.

“Consequently, the commission urges all political parties and aspirants to refrain from engaging in early campaigns prior to the general election,” Chebukati said.
