14 students from Fred’s Grammer mixed secondary were forced to jump out of a speeding matatu through the windows.
The students took the step in order to avoid being arrested after the matatu’s driver discovered that they were smoking weed and drinking.
According to a report by DCI, the suspects were heading home for a mid term break and had boarded a 2NK Sacco matatu at the Karatina bus stage.
“However on approaching Kibingoti along the Nyeri-Nairobi highway, the driver John Maina, sensed a strong aroma of cannabis sativa coming from the back of the matatu,” DCI’s statement read.
“Upon checking the rear view mirror, he was shocked to see billowing smoke as the seemingly excited teenagers passed a joint amongst themselves, while others imbibed alcoholic drinks,” DCI added.
The driver asked the students to stop smoking but they rudely asked him to concentrate on his work of driving them to Nairobi while warning him of dire consequences.
Maina decided to drive the them to Sagana Police station. The students however hurriedly found their way out of the matatu as it made its way into the station
“But the students who were quick to notice the sudden detour, hurriedly disembarked from the vehicle as it made its way to the station. They dangerously jumped from the windows of the matatu, leaving their half smoked joints, half-filled bottles with liquor and luggage in the vehicle,” DCI said.
Detectives at the police station summoned summoned the school’s principal to help them identify the students.
