Sonko, Waititu, Kidero Among 6 Former Governors Barred From Vying In 2022 Election

Date:

There will be no political comeback in 2022 for former disgraced governors Mike Sonko, Ferdinand Waititu, Evans Kidero and a few others.

National Cohesion integration Commission (NCIC) and Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) plan to block at least 22 politicians from contesting in the forthcoming 2022 general election.

NCIC and EACC flagged the politicians for engaging in hate speech, graft among other charges, the agencies plan to weaponize Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution to block the politicians from contesting in 2022.

Six governors and ex-governors are currently facing criminal and graft charges, making it difficult for the investigative agencies to clear them to vie for elective seats in 2022.

The six include; Muthomi Njoki (Tharaka Nithi), Moses Lenakulal (Samburu), Okoth Obado (Migori), Evans Kidero (former Nairobi governor), Ferdinard Waititu (former Kiambu governor) and Mike Sonko (former Nairobi governor).

Former governors Mike Sonko and Ferdinand Waititu are facing uncertain political futures following their impeachments over graft, abuse of office among other charges.

Law Society of Kenya (LSK) president Nelson Havi has warned former Waititu and Sonko to keep off the 2022 ballot informing what awaits them from the state.

According to Havi, he has informed the former county bosses that they should not dare vie in the year 2022 extending that their fate is already sealed.

Nelson Havi has said that Waititu, Sonko and other facing graft and criminal charges should not attempt to run for any seat may be it that of governor, MP or Senator since they will be going against Chapter Six of the Kenyan Constitution which prevent leaders with integrity issues to run for any political seat in the country.

“The fate of such fellows is sealed. That is why we have chapter six of the constitution which touches on the integrity issues. You saw some of them, the likes of Waititu, who tried to come back and vie but the EACC and the Courts got them. That was the case of Sonko too,” Havi said.

Adding that;

“The Constitution is a serious document and that is why it provided clauses in Chapter Six to highlight how an elected leader should be. Even if they try again, the law will catch up with them again.”
