Kipkabus High School in Uasin Gishu has been closed down indefinitely after students torched down a dormitory.
The students are said to have set ablaze the building to protest over poorly cooked ugali.
According to the area chief Jeremiah Muge , the incident occurred on Monday, November 1 at 8.00 am.
“The students used mattresses to torch down Njiru dormitory. All the learners have since been sent home,” Muge said.
The incident comes just a day after Chavakali boys’ and Buru Buru Girls’ dormitories went up in flames.
Videos that were widely shared in social media showed students of Buru Buru girls who had been trapped inside the burning storey building jumping through the windows to the mattresses that had been piled at the base of the building.
According to the principal Caroline Maina, the fire incident occurred after a guiding and counselling session with form one and two students.
“I had a baraza with form one and form two from morning until around 2:30 pm where I had even invited counselors to talk to the students. It is after the counseling session that I invited my guests for late lunch. As I was walking back, a teacher approached me notifying me that one of the dormitories was on fire,” Maina said.
At least 59 students were injured during the Sunday evening incident and they were rushed to Metropolitan Hospital and Jamaa hospital.
“A number of ambulances arrived at the school to ferry students to hospital. So far, 59 students have been confirmed injured and are receiving treatment in the Metropolitan and Jamaa hospitals in Nairobi,” she said while urging parents to remain calm as the school administration looked into the matter.
In Chavakali boys, the fire broke out at around 6pm but was contained by firefighters from the county government of Vihiga.
