The Kenya Bureau of Standards has raised a red flag to 14 more maize flour brands declaring them unfit for human consumption.
According to a statement by KEBS, the brands failed to comply with the required standards. Retailers have now been ordered to remove the said maize flour brands from their shelves.
The flour brands that have been flagged include, Ndovu maize flour, Prestige sifted maize, sima tamu, range corn, top white, diamond sifted maize, Bel’s organic, winnies ugali afya, family.
Others in the list are Jasiri sifted maize, Jema sifted maize, Mugambo sifted maize, Jibe maize flour and Jodari.
KEBS further asked millers to comply with the required maize flour standards for brands that are yet to be tested before taking them to the market.
The body further said that the move should be considered as a total ban but an aim meant to ensure that the brands take a corrective measure to ensure that they provide quality products for their consumers.
“We encourage your members to always validate the quality marks of products stocked for sale and remind them that any person found offering for sale substandard products contravenes the law and is liable for prosecution,” said the KEBS Director of Market Surveillance.
