The prime suspect in the murder of 25-year old Kenyan athlete Agnes Tirop will be detained for 20 days as detectives conclude investigations.
Ibrahim Rotich, who happens to be deceased’s husband, was arraigned at the Iten Court on Monday before senior principal magistrate Charles Kutwa but did not take plea.
The prosecution requested the court to allow them to hold the suspect for 20 days as they complete investigations into the death of Agnes.
“Your honour, I plead for more time because DCI officers are yet to go round the country to carry out a probe with a view to apprehend more suspects connected to the killing of the runner before being charged for murder,” Prosecutor Judith Ayuma told the court.
Magistrate Kutwa granted the request and ordered the matter to be mentioned at the Eldoret High Court on November 9.
“Since this is a matter revolving around a murder case, I do direct that it be mentioned at Eldoret High Court on November 9 for further directions,” Kutwa said.
Rotich will be locked up at the Eldoret Police Station. The magistrate also ordered a mental assessment to be conducted on Rotich.
Agnes was found dead on Wednesday October 13 at her home in Iten after her she went went missing. Her family filed a missing person report with the police and a search was conducted by detectives to establish her whereabouts.
According to the police reports, her lifeless body was found lying on a bed with stab wounds on her neck.
Rotich, who is suspected to have executed the murder, was on the run after the incident and was arrested in Changamwe, Mombasa county on Thursday night as he tried to flee to a neighboring country.
Agnes who participated in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics was the 5,000m world record holder on the women’s championship. She met her death just a few days before she turned 26 years.
