Interior cabinet secretary doctor Fred Okengo Matiangi has given Kenyans another public holiday which will come on an official working day.
Matiangi on Wednesday declared that Monday will be a public holiday since Utamaduni Day will be on 10th October which will be on a Sunday.
“Whereas this day is already conferred by law, this shall be the first time Utamaduni Day is observed in Kenya – and this press release serves to emphasize the need for all citizens to recognize and celebrate the rich cultural diversity of Kenya in a manner that promotes unity, national cohesion and economic progress in the country,” stated the Cabinet Secretary.
“In line with the provisions of Section 2 and 4 of the Public Holidays Act (Cap 110), it is hereby confirmed that 11th October 2021 will be a public holiday,” added Matiangi.
According to The Public Holidays Act of 1984, whenever a public holiday falls on a Sunday, then the first succeeding day should replace the same.
“Where, in any year, a day in Part 1 of the Schedule falls on a Sunday, then the first succeeding day, not being a public holiday, shall be a public holiday and the first-mentioned day shall cease to be public holiday.”
Moi Day was renamed Utamaduni Day in 2019 following an approval by the Cabinet and it is usually commemorated on 10th October.
The republic of Kenya had been marking the holiday since 1988 when the late President Daniel Moi marked 10 years in power but it was scrapped in 2010.
However, the High Court reinstated the day to be marked as a holiday because its removal amounted to the contravention of the Public Holidays Act.
