Former Tottenham Hot spurs midfielder Victor Wanyama has announced his exit from the international football.
Through a statement released on Monday, Wanyama said that he was retiring from the international football to give chance to the next generation of footballers.
“But all good things must come to an end eventually; and after long consideration, I have made the really difficult decision to retire from international Football,” Wanyama said.
“The time has come to hand over the team to the next generation so that they too can make their mark and help our country reach even greater heights,” he added.
Wanyama who currently plays for Montreal FC however said that he will continue to offer his support to Harambee stars but off the field.
“I hope to return one day and help the federation off the field but until then, I will still be Harambee Stars’ biggest supporter and I will be cheering you guy’s on from the sidelines,” he said.
He revealed that he has always dreamt of a chance to represent his country and that he was glad it came to pass.
“Growing up it was always my dream to get the chance to represent my country. With a great deal of pride, I can say that I have been fortunate to live my dream!” the 30-year old said.
Wanyama also said that he had had a great time being Harambee stars captain .
“From making my debut against Nigeria to captaining the team at Africa Cup of Nations finals in Egypt-these past 14-years have gone beyond what I ever thought possible.”
The footballer last played for Harambee stars in the Afcon qualifiers in November last year against Comoros which Harambee Stars lost 2-1.
He started playing for English Premier League in July 2013 after he was signed by Southampton before moving to Tottenham.
He became the first Kenyan player to score in the UEFA Champions League when he scored the first goal in Celtic’s 2–1 win over Barcelona on November 7, 2012.
