Beatrice Wawera was born with two sex organs and she was shunned by her own family because of stigma in the society. She now needs help to undergo surgery to remove one organ.
Wawera is among a handful of audacious intersex people in Kenya who have come out to openly talk about their condition.
Intersex people are individuals born with any of several sex characteristics including chromosome patterns, gonads or genitals that do not fit typical binary notions of male or female bodies.
Wawera likes to identify herself as a woman, but she also has visible attributes which are mostly regarded as characteristic of men.
Speaking during an interview on YouTube channel DJ Macdee TV, Wawera said that she noticing she was different from other girls when she was 7 years old.
She said her mother would tell her that it was God who created her that way she was and as such she shouldn’t worry.
Her mother took her to hospital and they were told to return when she was an adolescent but her mom never bothered to take her back.
Things took a different twist when neighbors found out that Wawera had two sex organs and begun to ridicule and mistreat her.
The societal stigma made her mother and sister to hate and reject her saying that she was making them to be the laughing stock in the village.
Wawera and her sister completed primary at the same time but her mother refused to pay for her high school education saying that it was a wastage of time and money since she would never help her or give her a grandchild.
An aunt offered to pay her school fees and she managed to complete her secondary education albeit many challenges
Wawera ran away from home amid increased mistreatment from her own mother and sister who were abused her psychologically.
She is currently living with her best friend who took her to an organization called Intersex Kenya which offered her counseling that helped her to accept her situation.
Wawera is now pleading with well-wisher to help her raise Ksh.150,000 to undergo sex reassignment surgery to be the person she desires to be.
