90-Year-Old Man Holds Ceremony In Readiness For His Death

Date:

Imagine this, you are in old age and realizing that your health is declining, so you start preparing for your death.

So that is the case of a 90-year-old Maasai man from Narok County who held a celebration as per the community customs in preparation for his death.

According to Nelelta Naurori, he has lived his life to the fullest and he is now ready for the next phase of his life, death.

To the nonagenarian’s 10 wives, 81 children, and about a thousand children, the reality of an imminent separation has dawned and they cannot hide from it.

A ceremony in line with the Maasai traditions was held on Saturday morning at his expansive 270-acre farm where an unblemished bull was slaughtered and meat from its right side was shared between him and his 10 wives.

The celebration according to the Maasai traditions coincides with Olosir Enkop – meaning short rains period, otherwise known as the lambing period in Maasai that comes immediately after Pushuka (flowering of Savanna trees) in November.

The celebration was done after Naurori’s family was done feasting, meat was shared among their neighbors with the bull’s head, horns, and crown left to decay within the compound.

The oil extracted from the bull is kept safe from embalming the body of the MZee after he dies.
