Uganda Opposition Presidential Candidate Bobi Wine Arrested

Ugandan opposition leader Bobi Wine was arrested on Tuesday after submitting his nomination papers to the elections body, his party said.

“They (police) used a hammer and broke the windows of his vehicle and forcefully dragged him out … they bundled him into their own vehicle and took off,” Joel Senyonyi, spokesman for the NUP party, said, adding he did not know why Wine was arrested.

The NUP party spokesman said it was not yet clear why Bobi Wine was arrested but promised to issue a statement on the arrest later.

The Presidential hopeful is aiming to end Yoweri Museveni’s 34 years reigns that make him Africa’s third longest-ruling president,

Ugandan elections are expected to be conducted in February next year.

Wine, 38, has earned a relatively large following moreso the youth courtesy of his music career and youthful age, something that has rattled the ruling Resistance Movement party and drawing a security crackdown on his supporters.

Ever since Wine whose real name is Robert Kyagulanyi, expressed his presidential ambitions, police and the military have repeatedly disrupted his rallies and beaten and arrested his supporters.

The recent arrest of Bobi Wine follows one that he was arrested together with hundreds of his followers by the military personnel after his party headquarters was raided and the security officers took his nomination papers.

The government announced that the supporters were to be charged in a military court for being in possession of the government materials and being a security threat to the nation.
