Three Chinese nationals are facing deportation after a Mombasa court found them guilty in a multi-million SGR scam.
Edna Nyaloti, Mombasa Chief magistrate, on Wednesday the 28th of October 2020, directed the police to escort Li Xiawou, Li Gen and Sun Xin to immigration offices so they can be deported back to China.
The magistrate in her ruling terminated the case and requested the courts to submit the foreigners’ deposit before deportation.
Earlier on, the Office of the Director of Public Prosecution (ODPP) had declared its unwillingness to pursue the matter.
The three Chinese nationals were involved in a 2018 SGR ticketing scam. The law caught up with them after they allegedly tried to bribe the ODPP with ksh 500,000.
Alongside the foreigners, authorities also arrested four Kenyan nationals who were at the moment working with the China Road and Bridge Corporation (CRBC). The CRBC operates the Madaraka express train between the Mombasa Nairobi route.
The multi-million SGR ticketing scam involved manipulating the train booking system. Since the CRBC staff operate the system, they would split the money between inside cartels and the Chinese railway operators.
Investigations uncovered that the crooks made ksh 1 million per day on all the trips made by the train.

This ticketing scam saw unsuspecting travellers lose some money as they attempted to travel during that period.
Philip Mainga, Kenya Railways Managing Director, revealed relevant authorities were carrying out investigations to uncover criminals of the scheme.
This is not the first time that the Kenyan government has had to deport Chinese nationals.
Earlier on this year on February, the Milimani courts ordered the deportation of 4 Chinese nationals who had mistreated a Kenyan worker. One of them was caught on camera caning a worker, contrary to Kenyan humane laws.
