Eight Injured In Suspected Al-Shabaab Attack

Date:

At least eight people have been wounded when suspected Al-Shabaab militants sprayed a bus carrying traveller with bullets in Mandera South on Tuesday.

According to the County Commissioner Joshua Kitakwa said the incident occurred between Elwak town and Kotulo.

“We are yet to know the exact number of injured people. So far no deaths have been reported,” he said without giving further details are reported by Daily Nation.

A source at Kotulo Sub-County Hospital, where the victims were taken told the publication that at least four people were in critical condition.

“We have received at least eight victims but four are in need of specialized care,” said the source.

The passenger bus – Makkah, is said to have left Mandera town at around 8 am and was attacked at around noon.

A survivor who spoke to Nation on anonymity said the gunshots flattened the vehicle’s tyres and damaged its fuel tank.

“It rained bullets as the driver manoeuvred. He stopped after the tyres were deflated,” he said.

The source added that the gunmen fled the scene without inspecting the bus.

The area MCA Mohamed Rashid said he was informed of the incident and was told it was undertaken by eight armed people.

“Eyewitnesses say the attackers shot at the bus after the driver defied their order to stop,” said the MCA as reported by Nation.

Rashid wants the security to be enhanced on the road and questioned why the police were not escorting the bus.

“We need to be told why the bus left Elwak town without police escorts,” he said.

Armed police officers have always been accompanying buses to derail the terrorists since 2015.

The incident came amid reports that the militants were planning a retaliatory attack after some of their fighters were killed in a clash with the Kenya Defence Forces in August.
