Tourism and Wildlife CS Alfred Mutua is leading the list of Cabinet Secretaries who have frequently traveled abroad.
Mutua, who previously served in the Foreign and Diaspora affairs docket, is leading at 28%.
“Given the international nature of his ministerial portfolios, extensive travel is an inherent expectation,” the report by TIFA between the period of January- December 2023, stated.
He is followed by Public Service CS Moses Kuria(16%) who was previously the Trade CS.
Mining CS Salim Mvurya comes third with 14%, followed by Treasury CS Ndung’u Njuguna and Prime CS Musalia Mudavadi at 13% and 12% respectively.
The least travelled CSs are Education CS Ezekiel Machogu and his Interior counterpart Kithure Kindiki, whose international travels are at 0%. Others are Kipchumba Murkomen, Aisha Jumwa and Susan Nakhumicha who head the Transport, Gender and Health dockets respectively. The trio’s international travels have been placed at 2%.
CS Kindiki holds the record for visiting the highest number of counties, having successfully covered 41 out of the 47 counties. He is followed by Susan Nakhumicha, TIFA said.
“There is no documented evidence of foreign trips linked to the roles of Kithure Kindiki (interior) and Ezekiel Machogu (education) in 2023,” the reports stated
“According to TIFA research, The top travel destination for our cabinet secretaries was Europe 24% share followed by the rest of Africa (excluding East Africa),” the report further read.
The research was based on analyzing activities of the Cabinet Secretaries as documented in the media, official Ministry channels, and their personal social media pages.
TIFA further noted that a staggering 54% of the cabinet secretaries’ activities concentrated their activities in Nairobi, totaling 1,377 engagements.
“The over-focus could be attributed to the fact that their offices are located in Nairobi.”
