The Commission for University Education has revoked its recognition of the Bsc in Management(external) degree from Team University belonging to Nairobi senator Johnson Sakaja.
In a letter addressed to IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati, the commission noted that Sakaja failed to utilize the opportunity he had been given to prove the validity of his degree certificate.
CUE said that Sakaja was supposed to present documents and information for him to be cleared of allegations of faking his degree certificate, since it had been established that he had not graduated from University of Nairobi with a Bachelor’s Degree in Actuarial Science as he had claimed before.
Sakaja however did not submit the requirements. They included; letter of admission from Team University, course units and dates studied, transcripts, receipts for fee payment, names of lecturers who taught him, graduation booklet and “any communication between him and the university staff concerning his studies at Team University.”
“Despite being granted an opportunity to make written and oral presentations on the matter, he disregarded, refused and ignored both the request to provide information and opportunity to exercise his right to be heard during further investigations,” part of CUE letter to Chebukati read.
The Commission therefore resolved to revoke its recognition of the degree on grounds that;
- The course listed on his certificate was not being offered at the university at the time he claims he undertook the course since the institution had not received accreditation from National Council for Higher Education(NCHE) to offer it. Sakaja’s degree certificate indicates that he studied a Bachelor of Science in Management(External). CUE noted from its investigations it established that Team University is only accredited to offer a Bachelor of Science in Management and not Bachelor of Science in Management(External).
- Secondly, the gubernatorial hopeful degree’s recognition was revoked because the degree title does not match what is offered at Team University therefore it contravenes provisions of the University Standards and Guidelines, 2014, which states that “ Academic Programmes title shall adopt universal nomenclature for similar programmes and shall be short, concise and descriptive of its overall content.”
- Sakaja declared that he only has one degree and that is from the University of Nairobi while vying for the senator position in 2017.
“There was no declaration made pertaining to Team University from which he now states that he obtained a degree from in 2016,” CUE noted adding that UoN had since written to it with information that Sakaja had not graduated since joining the institution in 2003\
4.Finally, Sakaja’s degree recognition was revoked because the Commission did not receive any evidence from Uganda’s NCHE, Team University or Sakaja himself to prove that he studied at Team university and earned the above mentioned degree.
