Public Health officials have evacuated 31 inmates who tested positive for the new coronavirus at the Nairobi Remand and Allocation Prison.
Commissioner of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo said the prisoners were evacuated and taken to various hospitals with Nairobi.
The 31 cases were part of the 59 samples taken from those in remand and prisons on Thursday, May 28 in the ongoing targeted mass testing undertaken by the ministry of health.
“From the results received on Saturday, 31 samples had tested positive for coronavirus after which the Nairobi County Emergency Response Team promptly moved in and evacuated the patients to various treatment centers for case management,” Commissioner of Prisons Wycliffe Ogallo said in a statement.
According to the Commissioner. the prisoners had completed 21 days in quarantine at the Nairobi Remand and Allocation Prison where they had been admitted from various courts.
The 31 individuals who turned positive were part of the 143 cases announced by the Ministry of Health on Saturday and raised the national tally to 1,888.

Ogallo told the public that all the other convicts and remandees were safe in their custody.
To prevent the spread of coronavirus within the prisons, the government halted the visits to the facilities for some time. And recently the prison authorities released 11,000 petty offenders per the National Council on Administration of Justice (NCAJ).
As President Kenyatta prepares to make key announcements to open the economy, the coronavirus curve within the country has continued to fluctuate.
The President is expected to address the nation and ease some of the measurements that were to flatten the curve. Some of the major announcements Kenyans are waiting from the government include the removal of national curfew, movement restriction, and opening of learning institutions.
