The Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission(IEBC) on July 10 published a list of candidates who will be participating in the August 9 polls.
More than 16000 candidates will be contesting in the much awaited polls. Elective positions that will be contested for include the Presidency, gubernatorial seats, Senatorial seats, Women Rep positions, MP and MCA positions.
In the list however a number of candidates however did not have any competitions and therefore IEBC declared them as duly elected before the polls were conducted. Those candidates were identified as Beatrice Kemei, Issa Aden and Julius Kimutai.
Kemei was gazetted as the only person seeking the Kericho Women Rep position. She is vying under a UDA ticket. She was able to clinch the party’s ticket after beating Florence Bore, the sitting Women Rep in the UDA primaries held in April this year.
The women Rep hopeful garnered 87,182 while her competitor managed to secure 64,651 votes.
On the other hand, Kimutai is seeking the Member of County Assembly for Ravine Ward in Baringo County while Aden is eyeing the MCA seat for Sabena ward, Garissa.
Politicians who have been elected unopposed in the previous elections include; Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria who is currently eyeing the Kiambu gubernatorial seat under his party Chama cha Kazi. He is however facing stiff competition from the first governor of the county William Kabogo, senator Kimani Wamatangi, Mwende Gatabaki among other candidates. Kuria has been serving as Gatundu MP since 2013 whereby he was elected on a Jubilee ticket.
Kikuyu MP Kimani Ichung’wa was also elected unopposed in 2017 but in the forthcoming polls, he will be battling with 9 candidates.
