Former Nairobi governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko joins the list of those seeking to succeed governor Ali Hassan Joho after the August 9 general elections.
Sonko is seeking the Mombasa gubernatorial seat under a Wiper ticket. His name has been submitted to IEBC after being cleared for the party primaries.
The ex-governor will be battling out for the Wiper ticket with Kisauni MP Ali Mbogo, who has expressed a similar interest.
Sonko said that he settled to vie for the Mombasa gubernatorial seat since he is a national leader and that Mombasa is his hometown.
“It’s true, I am going for Mombasa county gubernatorial seat on Wiper party under Azimio, I am a national leader and Mombasa is still my hometown,” Sonko told Tuko news.
Sonko’s political career was threatened after he was impeached as the Nairobi governor in December 2020 and he is seeking to make a comeback.
If he succeeds in the party primaries, he will face UDA aspirant and former Mombasa senator Hassan Omar and either Mvita MP Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir or businessman Suleiman Shabal, who are seeking an ODM ticket.
The reports have been received with mixed reactions with some netizens wondering what might be wrong with Nairobi, since two of it’s former governors are trying to seek seats elsewhere.
Aside from Sonko, the first Nairobi Governor, Evans Kidero, has expressed interest in Homabay’s gubernatorial seat.
“Nairobi is poisonous two, of its former governors are trying their luck in the opposite sides of the country,” Ndilator said on Twitter.
“I think we need just to do away with the Constitution .Chapter six is very clear leadership and integrity,” Collins Oyugi said.
Most feel that Sonko is not the right person for such a leadership position after his impeachment in December 2020.
Sonko was removed from office over abuse of office, gross misconduct, and lack of capability to run county affairs.
He is also facing graft charges and to add salt to the injury, he was recently banned from going to the United States over corruption and bribery claims.
