President Uhuru has issued a stan warning to Interior CS Fred Matiang’i over the 63Km Kisumu road project.
The President ordered CS Matiang’i to ensure that the Kisumu-Mamboleo-Chemelil-Muhoroni road to be completed in four months.
“We are constructing an international stadium here in Mamboleo and this type of road should not be leading to such a stadium,” President Kenyatta said during his tour in the lakeside city.
“I will be coming here in April next year and this should be completed by then.”
A few months ago the government approved Sh4.9 billion for the construction of the road after two decades of neglect.
The Kisumu roads link Kisumu to its neighboring countries.
In a letter, the Treasury CS Ukur Yatani told the Transport CS James Macharia on August 5 that the funding was provided for in the 2020/21 budget.
Kisumu residents, as well as leaders from the region, have for a very long time demanded the repair of the roads.
The road is filled with potholes leading to huge losses to motorists who constantly repair damaged vehicles.
The President’s announcement is a huge relief for the Nyanza region’s sugar belt as the road passes through three major millers.
CS Yatani said all preliminary conditions for approval including detailed designs, land acquisition, and regulatory approval, have been satisfied.

“The purpose of this letter, therefore, is to grant you approval to implement these projects within the provision of the Public Procurement and Disposal Act 2015, among others,” Yatani said.
At the same time, the President also asked residents to fully back the BBI aimed at uniting the country. President Kenyatta asked citizens to read the report.
The President’s handshake partner and ODM leader Raila Odinga noted that the country is directly headed to the referendum and that “it will be successful”.
“We want 80 percent of Kenyans to vote for BBI,” he said.
