The Rich And Powerful Are Flouting Covid-19 Rules – And That Could Hurt Us All

Date:

As the country was announcing restriction to curb the spread of coronavirus, the Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe constantly said, “we’re all in this together”.

So when the rich and powerful break the guidelines, it provokes public anger and puts communities’ inequalities on the full picture.

In Europe, an EU Commissioner Phil Hogan resigned from his post last week for breaking coronavirus restrictions by attending a political golf society. Hogan was just the latest politician to be caught flouting the rules.

A minister in Ireland also resigned over the so-called Golfgate scandal. The dinner was held after the government imposed restrictions that limited gatherings to six people.

On the other hand, New Zealand health minister, David Clark, was forced to resign after missteps including breaking the stay-at-home order by the government to take his family to the beach.

Social distancing seems to have been largely disregarded in Kenya today. In perhaps the most striking example, many people gathering at market places with few people wearing masks as they interact and buy items.

The behavior of some politicians and government officers have come to exemplify a double standard in the public mind where ordinary wananchi are expected to follow the rules while the elite can apparently break them with impunity.

Such behaviors have a lasting impact on the public’s willingness to abide by the restrictions by the ministry of health

When high profile individuals are called upon to resign or arrested for violating the restriction, it gives ordinary citizens a sense of disenfranchisement since it drives a message that it’s one rule for us, as in the privileged, and the other for them.

Celebrities, sports stars, and members of the cultural elite have also been caught flouting the Covid-19 restrictions too.

CS Kagwe’s son and rapper, Kush were reportedly caught at night flouting Covid-19 restrictions. But when his father (Mutahi Kagwe) was asked about the same, he only said “his house has nobody below 18 years”.

Several English Premier League football stars, as well as Tottenham manager Jose Mourinho, are reported to have breached lockdown restrictions. England and Man City left-back Kyle Walker was forced to apologize for allegedly hosting a party with two sex workers.

Such example have an impact on fans and people in general who are less likely to be sticking by the rules

The inequalities are shown when the rich and the powerful break the rules only add to public discontent.

The pandemic has made the Kenyan society even more unequal than it already was with the restrictions on access to outside space and job cuts hitting the poor hardest. Experts say to compound the gap in terms of ‘one rule for us and one rule for them’ completely undermines the urge of collective responsibility.

Experts have also warned that too much media coverage e of those flouting the Covid-19 regulations – among the larger society more than the politicians – was also a risk in itself.

If the media puts too much attention on violations, the danger will not be just a misrepresentation but can also undermine compliance by building false norms, by saying to the public ‘if everyone else is going out, if everyone else if flouting the guidelines, why not us’.

Why Our Leaders Should Watch Out

What leaders should do is just simple, lead by example.

Effective leadership depends on being part of the group that the leader wants to lead. As a leader, you should build trust with your people. Anything that separates leadership from the electorates undermines it.

If political leaders do things on the contrary to what they tell people then the Wananchi will lose trust in them and are less likely to follow the rules.

This will be just as important in the coming months, as even the Education Cabinet Secretary George Magoha hinting on students soon going back to school.

As most countries wait for the vaccine to be made, they are currently relying on their populations to adhere to the rules and changing their behaviors to protect the most vulnerable.

Meaning if there is any reason not to comply with the guidelines, or given an excuse not to comply, then that undermines the whole public health effort.
