A physically challenged woman who went to register as a voter on a wheelbarrow touched the hearts of IEBC officials.
The officials decided to get rid of her transport woes by rallying for support to purchase her a wheelchair.
The woman identified as Selifa Opanda was transported on the wheelbarrow by her uncle to register as a voter last Monday at Ilungu primary school in Emuhaya constituency, Vihiga county.
According to Citizen TV digital, she acquired her Identity Card this year and had requested her family to take her to a registration centre as only a few days had remained before the exercise was closed .
Once the registration process was concluded, the officials took her photos on the wheelbarrow and shared them with their colleagues on WhatsApp group calling upon them for financial support to buy a wheelchair for Selifa.
A few days later, enough money to purchase a wheelchair was raised and even more for groceries for her to take home where she stays with her mother.
In a separate incident, voters in the Bondeni area of Nakuru were treated to a food festival over the weekend as one way of ensuring that more of them register as voters.
The festival was organized by grassroot leaders on Sunday October 31 and residents were required to provide a voter’s card before being served food.
According to the organizers of the festival, the event was necessary to lure more people into registering since very few people had registered as voters in the country.
The mass voter registration exercise was to be concluded on Tuesday, November 2 but the court ordered IEBC to extend it for 7 more days pending the hearing and determination of a petition by a voter who argued that IEBC did not achieve its target of registering over 6 million voters.
