Retired Chief Justice Willy Mutunga has praised Deputy President William Ruto’s campaign strategy ahead of the 2022 General Elections.
Speaking in an interview with The Standard Mutunga said that Ruto is an extremely clever man even though he is not on the list of the persons he will be supporting in the coming elections.
According to the former Chief Justice, Ruto has been posing as an underdog but the strategy is working for him against his political opponents.
“Dangerous as it may sound, the Hustler thing is challenging the status-quo, the haves versus the have-nots. Ruto is among the ‘haves’ despite what he portrays himself as,” Mutunga explained.
Adding that, “He is extremely clever.”
Mutunga said that the Deputy President has an upper hand because he has a great team of advisors as compared to the former prime minister Raila Odinga.
“Raila has been let down by his intellectual team… The thing is, Ruto has cornered them because they can’t oppose his bottom-up narrative,” said Mutunga.
He further said that Ruto has the brains to repeat what he is told by his great team of advisors and that he is going to defeat Raila.
“I have done my own investigation. People are getting to accept that it will be a race between William Ruto and Raila Odinga. As of now, William Ruto will beat Raila,” Mutunga said.
In the past, Mutunga described Ruto as a brilliant influencer
“He is a brilliant organizer and mobilizer. I’ve never underestimated our politicians at all or even the religious leaders, they have a following and they know how to keep their following,” Mutunga said in June while speaking to a Belgian NGO, The International Crisis Group.
He further said that just like other politicians, Ruto is also a pathological liar who tells the truth unintentionally.
“The deputy president is just being opportunistic. He never supported the Constitutional referendum in 2010, he was along with the churches vehemently against the constitution. But then again, as we say here in Kenya, politicians are pathological liars who tell the truth by accident,” he added.
