Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka might have the last laugh after IEBC said that he will be cleared to contest for presidency in the August 9 elections.
According to a publication by the Saturday Nation, the commission will clear Musyoka if no one opposes his candidature or no court order stops it from doing so.
The commission said that it will determine Musyoka’s fate with regards to section 23 of the election Act which outlines the qualifications and disqualifications of a presidential candidate.
The constitution states that a person is qualified to vie for presidency if; he/she is a Kenyan citizen by birth, is qualified to vie for MP seat, should be nominated by a political party or stand independently and must be nominated by at least 2000 voters from 24 counties.
The list of things that can disqualify one from vying for presidency include; being a public officer or acting in any State or other public office.
IEBC intends to clear candidates on May 30.
Musyoka announced his presidential bid on Monday May 16, and went ahead to name Andrew Leteipa Sunkuli as his running mate. He will be vying under his Wiper party ticket.
This is after ODM leader Raila Odinga, who is the presidential candidate for Azimio la Umoja Coalition, declined to offer him the running mate position, which he handed to Narc Kenya leader Martha Karua. Raila offered Musyoka the Chief Minister position in case Azimio wins the August 9 general elections.
Earlier, reports indicated that Kalonzo would not be allowed to vie for presidency under a Wiper ticket since the party is a member of One Kenya Alliance which is under Azimio, therefore it would not be possible for an Alliance to present two candidates.
Musyoka is however seeking to detach himself from Azimio.
