Winnie Odhiambo, the wife to the late Nakuru Dr. Gekara has opened up on how their love with the man who killed their two children began.
“This is a man I was blessed to have known for years. A man I could only be grateful for when I realised that I would rather have known for a moment, than never at all. A man I would rather endure this inexplicable pain of outliving than to never have seen his face. So soft spoken but so warm and loving.” She said while eulogizing Gakara.
The Nairobian reported that in her tribute, the 29 year old Winnie laid bare how Dr. Gakara pulled the love strings in her heart as they performed a cesarean section on a patient, her very first operation. Their first encounter in the theater turned into their love story.
“I was a clinical officer intern which is rigorous and exhausting. On a particular day in February 2014, I was on my day 4 of maternity rotation at around 8am. I presented the first two clinical cases to Dr. Gakara and we examined one patient.” She said.
Consequently, Winnie revealed that the late doctor respectfully asked for her decision as she carefully listened to her before the two came to an agreement that the woman needed to go through an emergency cesarean section where Winnie was to help him.
“It was my very first surgery. I was nervous and into the surgery, I dropped down several instruments at once. Chills ran down my spine, my feet trembled and my hands shook. I was wondering how terrible this consultant was going to shout at me.
“He looked at me calmly and in a soft voice told me, “Don’t worry, you are here to learn. Relax.” I was so touched by his words, and as they say, the rest is history. The union of James Gakara and Winnie Odhiambo was officiated on November 26, 2015.” She added.
