Why University Of Nairobi (UON) Is Chasing Over 30,000 Students Like Stray Dogs

Date:

In one of the most unexpected moves, The University of Nairobi (UON) has chased away over 30,000 students like stray dogs.

The registered students who account for more than a third of UON students are reported to have overstayed at the institution without a concrete reason.

According to UON’s vice chancellor professor Kiama Gitahi, he told the Business Daily that the exercise was prudent since it targeted students that had stayed longer at the university of Nairobi. As a result, the VC opined that there was a need to let go of these inactive students in a bid to create room for new students.

“We have to ensure that we have active students. If you have not been active, then we remove you from our system so that we focus on those who have registered with us and are spending their time here,” he said.

The university of Nairobi (UON) chancellor added that they would be combing through their system to identify those students that end up disappearing after taking one course.

“Some students register, do one course, then disappear but do not say where they have gone. We are combing through the system because we need to plan for the active students.”  He stated.

This trimming of the University of Nairobi (UON) comes at a time when the Higher Education Loans Board (Helb) announced that about 109,661 former campus students have defaulted on payments.

As a result, upto 10.9 billion Kenya shillings is owed the government according to the Educations Loans Board.

This move by UON however attracted mixed reactions with most people castigating the institution with very few supporting the decision. Kenyans had the following to say:

“This is very insensitive of the university of Nairobi. They should first make a follow up and establish why some students are not active. Some may be battling financial constraints.”
