Why Syria President Bashar al-Assad Is Pleased With Russia’s Move To Invade Ukraine

Date:

As most people in the world condemn Russia’s invasion on Ukraine, the invasion seems to be the joy of Syrian president Bashar al-Assad.

Bashar is fully behind the invasion, and termed it a correction of history in a phone call with Russian president Vladimir Putin.

“It is a correction of history and restoration of balance which was lost in the world after the breakup of the Soviet Union,” Bashar was quoted.

“Syria stands with the Russian Federation based on its conviction that its position is correct and because confronting NATO expansionism is a right for Russia,” he further said.

He also blamed the Western nations for the bloodshed that has been witnessed in parts of the world.

“Western nations bear responsibility for the chaos and bloodshed because of dirty methods to support terrorists in Syria and Nazis in Ukraine,” Bashar said.

Putin ordered his troops to conduct a military operation in Ukraine which began on Thursday this week.

Apparently, Syria and Russia are staunch allies. When Syria was facing a civil war back in 2015, Russia intervened by launching air attacks against rebels who would have otherwise defeated Bashar’s troops that were struggling.

Russia’s intervention helped Syria in restoring back territories that they had lost to rebels. A total of 63,000 Russian military officers were deployed for the operation.

The civil war is said to have claimed about a half a million lives and ten of millions others were displaced.
