Deputy president William Samoie Ruto on Saturday dropped his hardliner stand in Migori county and promised to offer both Raila Odinga and president Uhuru Kenyatta VIP protection.
According to Ruto, he will ensure that the Orange Democratic Movement leader and the head of state are always protected if he takes over the leadership of the country in 2022.
“I will take care of them without bias. I will ensure they have adequate protection. The police officers assigned to them will ensure they move around and conduct their businesses freely. No problem!” Said the deputy president.
However, political analysts have seen this move by DP Ruto as playing smart given that he was in Raila’s stronghold and had to speak things that resonate with the Migori locals.
“The DP played smart in Migori by avoiding his usual abrasive and combative politics directed at the opposition leader. In normal days, William Ruto would have used the term wale waganga but he avoided going that direction.” He said.
“The fact that he also assured residents that he will treat Mr. Odinga well if he makes it to the presidency made those opposition diehards give him a listening ear. He scored 95% in his Migori tour, no doubt about that.” He added.
At the same time, the deputy president revisited his bottom up economic model and insisted that it is the only avenue that will spur economic growth for the common mwananchi.
“The Bottom-up economic model will lift majority of ordinary Kenyans who are struggling to make ends meet. Interacting with residents of Migori County at Awendo town, Uriri and Rapogi centres after a service at Awendo Central Seventh Day Adventist church.” Said Ruto.
William Ruto also castigated state agencies while warning them to desist from pursuing those politicians allied to him. This was seen as a way of defending Migori governor Okoth Obado who has been facing numerous corruption cases.
EACC was at some point on the neck of Mr. Obado after he was accused of using his powers to squander the county coffers which saw his close allies including immediate family members benefit from the proceeds of corruption.
