The National Assembly Speaker race as well as that of the senate are just heating up as both houses convene on Thursday September 8 for the first time after the August 9 general election.
Kenya Kwanza fronted Moses Wetang’ula for the National Assembly speaker position while their Azimio counterparts had suggested Kalonzo Musyoka.
Other notable names that would be going for the positions include former National Assembly speaker Kenneth Marende who is in Azimio, Waihiga Mwaure, among others. Kalonzo is however said to have pulled out of the race over fear of being humiliated since Kenya Kwanza has more numbers of lawmakers after several of them defected from Azimio.
Former minister Agriculture Minister Kipruto Arap Kirwa, is also claiming that Azimio stands no chance of winning against Kenya Kwanza in the respective races.
“On the issue of the senate and the National Assembly, while Azimio is absolute in terms of numbers there are certain dynamics that we can not run away from, one, the Jubilee MPs who are in Azimio side are likely to gravitate towards the UDA because these are people who have been together,” the Azimio member said in an interview with a local TV station.
He further added that Wetang’ula might also gain favor from Azimio MPs from Western because of the neighborhood factor.
“When it comes to the question of the National Assembly speaker, the Hon. Wetang’ula may have an edge over Kalonzo given the fact Some of the Azimio Members of Parliament from Western Kenya are likely to vote for Wetang’ula not because he is part of their equation but because of the proximity at home this I can reliably conclude given the fact that I have been talking to some of them,” Kirwa said
He added that president-elect William Ruto should have a strategy to strike a deal with Kalonzo who has over three governors, senators and over 25MPs so as to strengthen his support base.
This comes at a time when Uhuru Kenyatta has summoned Azimio MPs ahead of Thursday’s sitting.
