Why Neymar could be banned for Champions League final

Date:

Neymar is potentially facing being banned for the Champions League final for swapping shirts after Paris Saint-Germain ‘s semi-final win over RB Leipzig.

The French side booked their first ever European Cup final with a convincing 3-0 win over the Bundesliga side in Portugal on Tuesday night.

Goals from Marquinhos, Angel Di Maria, and Juan Bernat sealed victory and PSG will now face Bayern Munich or Lyon in the showpiece game on Sunday.

But, according to sources , they may have to play without Neymar because of his actions moments after the final whistle when he swapped shirts with a Leipzig player.

The Brazil superstar was spotted making the exchange with Marcel Halstenberg on the pitch, which is against Uefa rules.

Uefa’s 31-page ‘Return to play protocol’, issued earlier this month, states: “Players are recommended to refrain from swapping their shirts.”

It adds that non-compliance with the obligations “may lead to disciplinary measures in accordance with the Uefa Disciplinary Regulations.”

It had been reported before the return of the Champions League after lockdown that swapping shirts during the mini-tournament would result in a 12-day period of self-isolation.

Uefa’s official protocol is not thought to state that isolation would have to take place, but there are now fears about Neymar’s involvement.

The 28-year-old was the major driving force behind PSG’s victory on Tuesday night, with the former Barcelona star putting in a masterful performance.

While he failed to get on the scoresheet once again, he assisted Angel Di Maria’s goal with a wonderful back heel and hit the post twice.

Neymar has endured a tough time in Paris since his £198million move from the Nou Camp in 2017 but there are no doubting his talents.

With PSG so dominant in France over the past decade, the only trophy they crave is the Champions League.

Neymar was brought in solely to help them win the competition and him not being bale to feature in their first ever final would be a massive blow.

There is no indication yet that he will be banned for Sunday’s game but fans and everyone else involved in the club could face an anxious few days to find out.
