Wiper party leader Kalonzo Musyoka has reportedly ditched his quest for the Speaker of The National Assembly and Senate job.
According to insiders from his camp, most MPs felt that the former Vice President would be humiliated if he ran for the speaker positions because the numbers in both houses do not favor Azimio-OKA following the recent wave of defections to Kenya Kwanza.
Kalonzo also dropped his bid after the Wiper party Executive Council, who convened at the Wiper party’s headquarters on Tuesday, convinced him to drop his bid so that he could focus on building his brand.
Kalonzo’s exit gives Kenya Kwanza’s Moses Wetang’ula an upper hand in the National Assembly Speaker job.
The exit of Kalonzo brings the number of those who applied for the Senate speaker job to 18 and that of the National Assembly to 16. Others interested in the National Assembly speaker job include Agano party leader Waihiga Mwaure
The Senate speaker job has attracted Kenneth Marende who also applied for the National Assembly speaker job, former Mombasa senator Hassan Omar, former Kilifi governor Amason Kingi among others.
The 13th parliament will be convening on Thursday and the first task of the newly elected MPs and senators will be to find the speakers after they are sworn in.
