Veteran lawyer Ahmednasir Abdullahi has given a blow by blow account of how former chief justice David Kenani Maraga turned into a beggar.
According to lawyer Ahmednasir, the ex chief justice called him one night literally begging him to save his job.
He made these sentiments while responding to a defamation suit that was filed by David Maraga where he confessed that the former CJ even welcomed him at his Karen home and served him a special meal of ugali and chicken for a successful lobbying.
Having been elected the Law Society of Kenya president in 2003, the senior counsel said that he together with other council members visited Nakuru and were welcomed by Maraga.
As a result, Ahmednasir disclosed that Maraga called him the following night to beg him to lobby a Abdullahi commissioner so that he could save his job.
He also claimed in his affidavit that Maraga contacted him to favor his application after he applied to be appointed a judge in the court of appeal.
“I remember Maraga was literally shouting please help me, my brother, my career is over, I am finished… the former CJ begged me to lobby commissioner Abdullahi,” Ahmednasir said in his affidavit.
“Maraga was one of the senior lawyers practising in Nakuru and welcomed us, following his strong solicitation and constant lobbying we included him in a list of 35 lawyers and was appointed Judge in 2004.
“When the plaintiff applied for the promotion to be appointed Judge of Appeal, I met the plaintiff whilst I was in the company of my wife. He pleaded with me to look into his application favourably,” he added.
Former CJ Maraga had sued the senior counsel for his tweets which on several occasions accused him of leading a supreme court that glorified draft. However, Ahmednasir in self defense told the court that Mr. Maraga could not sue him over remarks he made while he was still a public officer.
“On January 12, the defendant posted, published and circulated a defamatory, libellous, and scandalous tweet on his account. The said tweet attracted 565 comments, 381 retweets and 2500 likes,” Read part of Maraga’s affidavit.
