Gospel singer Daddy Owen and first daughter Charlene Ruto have been the talk of town in the recent days, with Kenyans suspecting that they might actually be an item.
The speculations were fueled by Charlene’s visit to Owen’s rural home in Kakamega county during the festive season.
Owen invited Charlene to his home to introduce her to his mother, with only close family members and Charlene’s friends attending the event.
Andrew Shiroko Shilenje, the Abatsotso Cultural Council of Elders Secretary General, revealed to Standard media that the ceremony was similar to when a wife is introduced to the community she has been married to.
“Charlene was invited the way we invite a woman who has joined our community as a wife,” the insider said.
He went on to explain the significance of the groundnut pot that was presented to Charlene among other occurrences that were witnessed during the event.
“The message from the mother-in-law to the daughter-in-law was very clear…’ let your marriage life blossom and bring forth children,” said Shilenje while explaining that groundnuts are traditionally known for motivating bed matters.
“The lesso Owen’s mother tied around her waist was symbolic in nature as it meant that Charlene should look decent whenever she’s passing near her father-in-law without raising eyebrows, in case she is wearing a skimpy dress that’s revealing,” he went on.
Shilenje added that the leso also symbolized that Charlene had officially been welcomed to the community as their wife.
“The lesso is like a gown and that was an Abatsotso cultural wedding, the reason you saw people celebrating. The community was happy to have gotten a wife. If Owen marries Charlene, he cannot divorce her in future because ‘huyo ni bibi wa jamii’ (community wife); he can only marry another wife to make them two,” he said.
