The death of Wilson Ombacho, fourth-year student at the University of Nairobi (UoN), has raised more questions than answers as people struggle to find out why he killed himself.
Ombacho committed suicide on December 13th after treating his friends to one of a kind party which turned out to be a farewell treat.
One of his colleagues who was at the party with him revealed that the deceased told everyone to make sure they order for whatever they wanted due to the fact it was his last day on earth.
Still contemplating whether or not he was joking, some ordered after which the deceased paid their bills.
“He came to the club and told us to enjoy ourselves. Actually, he even said that since this was going to be his last day on earth, he was going to make sure that he buys everything for us telling everyone who was in the club to make sure they order what they want. He kept his promise and used all of his money to the point where he later borrowed ksh. 100 from one of his friend’s. He used the money to buy a pesticide which was found in his room”, a friend to Ombacho was quoted by the press.
After Wilson Ombacho borrowed the Ksh100 from a friend, he used the money to buy pesticide. He ingested it and lost his life.
Ombacho was rushed to a nearby clinic but was referred to a well equipped Tabaka Mission Hospital where he died later that evening.
According to his brother Calvin Ogenche, the deceased was affected by their mother’s death in August as well as his delayed graduation.
22-year-old Wilson Ombacho was a fourth year student pursuing Bachelor Degree in Arts (History and Kiswahili) at UoN.
“His peers had graduated, and some had gotten jobs. On his end, there was little progress, leading to him retreating to the village. We, however, kept encouraging him that things would look up,” Calvin Ogenche told the Standard.
On the day he died, Ombacho kept on telling his friends that he was looking forward to “join my mother in heaven so that I leave this world to you people, who are happy in it”.
Both mother and son died at 5.35 pm on diverse dates. Ombacho will be laid to rest on December 22 at his parents’ home in Eberege Village, Bomachoge Borabu Sub-County in Kisii County.
Reacting to this incident, Narc Kenya party leader Martha Karua called upon University Of Nairobi to urgently address the issue of missing marks.

Other people faulted Ombacho’s friends who partied with him for failing to notice the obvious tell tale signs of suicide tendency.
