Confusion on the minority party leadership in parliament has finally been brought to a halt following a ruling that was delivered by speaker Moses Wetang’ula on Wednesday.
In his ruling, Wetang’ula approved the removal of Chege as Deputy Minority Whip, announcing that Embakasi West MP Mark Mwenje will now be replacing her.
“That there currently exist no bar against the decision made by the minority party to replace its Whip. Standing order 20a(5) requires the Speaker to communicate the decision to replace the Whip to the House, in this regard, Hon Mark Mwenje forth replaces Sabina Chege as the Deputy Whip of the minority party,” the speaker ruled.
This comes after a series of court battles by Chege, that sought to challenge Azimio’s move to kick her out of the position.
Her final blow came on October 9, when a Kiambu court threw out her petition.
“Kiambu High Court has thrown out the petition challenging Azimio La Umoja One Kenya Alliance’s decision to replace Hon. Sabina Chege with Embakasi West MP Hon. Mark Muriithi Mwenje as the Deputy Minority Whip in the National Assembly,” Jubilee shared online.
Chege was fought by her party over claims of shifting her allegiance to the Kenya Kwanza government.
The opposition decided to replace her with Mwenje in April this year, but the parliament was yet to approve it as Chege sought the court’s mercies.
