The Kenya Metrological Department has warned of heavy downpours starting from Friday, October 27 in various parts of the country.
In an advisory released on Thursday, October 26, the weatherman noted that heavy rains could be experienced in Marsabit, Mandera, Wajir, Garissa, Isiolo, Embu, Nyeri, Kiambu, Nyandarua, Laikipia, Murang’a, Meru, Kirinyaga, Tharaka Nithi, Kwale, and Mombasa.
As a result of the heavy downpour, the weatherman asked residents to be on the lookout for possible flooding.
The rains according to the weatherman will be accompanied by gusty winds, adding that flood waters may appear in places where it has not rained heavily especially downstream.
“Residents are advised to avoid driving through, or walking in moving water or open fields and not to shelter under trees and near grilled windows when raining to minimize exposure to lightning strikes,” it read in part.
“The strong winds may blow off roofs, uproot trees and cause structural damages. Updates will be provided promptly if there are any changes,” it added.
Several counties had started preparations in case of heavy rainfall. Nairobi for instance unclogged the drainage systems and also launched relocation plans in case of flooding.
Machakos Governor Wavinya Ndeti acquired motor boats to help rescue residents and navigate in case of flooding.
However, President William Ruto announced that the country will not experience El Nino.
