Keroche heiress Anerlisa Muigai took to Instagram to air out her frustrations over the shut down of her parents brewer, Keroche.
Keroche breweries is embroiled in a tax row with KRA over Kshs 322 million tax arrears and this has seen the Naivasha-based brewer get shut down from time to time.
KRA demanded that the brewer pays the tax within six months but since the company has not been making profits due to the covid pandemic, they wanted to clear the debt in 24 months.
According to Anerlisa, Nobody was willing to chip in to help Keroche yet over 600 people were at risk of losing their jobs.
“It’s so sad that Keroche has been shut down and nobody seems to want to listen, help or negotiate.”“We, (Nero Company) happen to share the same compound with them and I must say, it has been very sad seeing Keroche closed for two months and even worse, 650 people are stranded wondering when Keroche will start being operational and are also at risk of losing their jobs,” she shared on her Insta stories
Anerlisa further said that when big companies like Keroche get shut down, other upcoming businesses will not have the strength to go on.
“Every time I ask myself if at all a big company like Keroche can be shut down just like that, how do we and other upcoming businesses get the strength to continue running our businesses?” she posed.
“How do you get your taxes paid by closing Keroche and on top of that you tell all the banks not to give them a loan? How inhuman can one get? At this point I leave everything to God. May God help us all, ” Anerlisa further said.
A number of netizens were however not willing to sympathize with her and instead faulted the family for not being keen in paying taxes. Some said that they are now trying to use the loss of jobs to many Kenyans so as to save the business.Below are some of their comments
“We all pay taxes! That family has money to campaign for the senate seat but ushuru hawataki kulipa yet the same Kenyans defending them complain our external debt is too high. Where do some people think money for development comes from?” David Maina Ndung’u said on Facebook.
“Most of these companies are the companies that mistreat workers, underpaying them, because of management whose duty is to benefit themselves, now that it went wrong, that where justice is needed, why?,why have you not been paying tax, kaisari apewe yake,” Mike Ryan said.
Anita Ngori said, “And we are also asking ourselves if a big company like keroche does not pay taxes why should we? Lipeni Ushuru, stop hiding behind ‘people will lose jobs’ we know you don’t care about your employees
