A wanted man from Gikindu village in Maragua, Murang’a has finally been arrested by police after coming out of his hideout to celebrate his son’s birth.
21-year old Daniel Kung’u Ndung’u escaped from Maragua police station on April 6 alongside 20-year old Andrew Kamau Wairimu who had been arraigned in court and charged with three counts of defilement.
Ndung’u escaped custody after being charged with robbery with violence at the Kagumo High Court.
He is also claimed to have escaped from the same police station on March 3.
In the April incident, the two escaped from the station at 9 pm through the prison’s ventilations without being noticed by the officers on duty.
Ndung’u is said to have come out of his hideout after receiving information that his wife had delivered a baby boy.
He sneaked to his house at 6.30 pm before going to celebrate with several bottles of liquor in a nearby banana plantation with three of his friends.
As they were making merry, Ndung’u started shouting about how he was going to become a better robber in order to fend for his family that had now grown.
A passer-by overheard their conversation and alerted the police.
“We received a tip off from a resident that there were three drunkards in a banana plantation who were drinking alcohol and one of them was shouting about how he will terrorize them with robberies,” Murang’a South Sub county police boss Alex Shikondi said.
Five officers arrived at the scene and arrested Ndung’u together with his colleagues.
The officers said that the suspect continued to praise his wife for giving birth to a baby boy even after the arrest.
Ndung’u took the officers to his hideout on Wednesday after being sober. The police recovered a juice blender, a laptop, loudspeaker, 32-inch TV and a DVD player.
He was first arrested and served as a juvenile at Shimo la Tewa prison in 2016 but escaped and went to live with his grandparents at Gikindu village.
The three will be arraigned in court whereby Ndung’u will be charged with robbery with violence, burglary, escape from lawfulcustody and also being a nuisance to the public.
