Kirinyaga County boss Anne Mumbi Waiguru has dropped the strongest hint yet that she could be a one term governor.
Waiguru’s political future is in a limbo as she revealed on Monday October 4th that she might not seek re-election in 2022.
Speaking during an interview on NTV, Waiguru explained that she will not seek re-election if she is offered the position of deputy president by serious contenders vying for president in 2022.
Musalia Mudavadi and Kalonzo Musyoka met with Waiguru in recent days and it was alleged that they were offering her the position of deputy president.
However, Waiguru didn’t reveal who she will vote for president in 2022 – meaning she is still buying time to determine whether she will take the deputy president offer if it comes as she doesn’t want to appear to be inclined to any presidential contender at the moment.
The Kirinyaga governor has been facing fierce competition from Women Rep Purity Ngirici who has declared her interest to vie for governor in 2022.
It will be interesting to see whether Waiguru will face off with Ngirici or if she will go for the bigger position of deputy president.
The Kirinyaga county boss overcame several obstacles ever since she made her political debut in 2017.
Waiguru became Kirinyaga governor after defeating her predecessor former governor Joseph Ndathi in Jubilee primaries and went on to win the national election.
Waiguru’s political career faced acid test in 2020 when she was impeached by the Kirinyaga County Assembly on June 9th over allegations of gross misconduct and abuse of office.
23 of the 33 MCAs in the County Assembly voted for her removal while only six abstained. Senate committee however saved Waiguru when her impeachment motion was tabled on the floor of the House.
