IEBC chairman Wafula Chebukati has rubbished claims that he is a poor communicator as indicated by a report published on January 6.
The report by Paul Achar, an executive communication coach and Dr. Sam Kamau, a communications scholar and lecturer at Aga Khan University dubbed Best Communicators 2021 was published on the said date in The Daily Nation newspaper.
While addressing the press in Nairobi, Chebukati said that the report was false and had been doctored. He claimed that the authors of the report did not conduct a proper survey.
“I looked at the report and my conclusion was that the report was compiled by two individuals, who did not carry out any survey,” the IEBC boss said.
He added that Kenyans were not consulted and that the authors might have been driven by their personal opinions.
“I neither think Kenyans were consulted. The authors of the report might have been driven by personal opinions. I still cannot understand what drove them to draft such a misleading and alarming report,” Chebukati claimed.
The report ranked experts in various fields in the country with Dr. Loyce Ombajo, Dr Rose Mutiso (researcher), Justice Joel Ngugi (Judiciary) Dr Mercy Mwangangi (Health CAS) and Gen Robert Kibochi (Chief of Defence Forces) being among the best public speakers of 2021.
Those listed as poor public speakers included Chebukati, former FKF president Nick Mwendwa, Education CS George Magoha, and pastor James Maina Ng’ang’a.
The authors said that Chebukati had been in office for more than five years but did not seem to have grown communications skills while Magoha’s communication approach was described as combative.
“Education CS, Magoha, communication approach is often combative. Unfortunately, this kind of communication is rarely effective. The CS would be better served by taking a more persuasive and consultative approach,” part of the report read.
Government institutions listed poor communicators were IEBC, National Police Service and Judicial Service Commission
