Kenyans have joined arms in demanding the government to lower the prices of food stuffs that have increased the cost of living.
Through the #lowerfoodprices that is trending on social media, citizens want prices of commodities such as bread, cooking oil and sugar lowered.
Some have threatened to boycott the coming election if the cry of a common citizen is not addressed.
“Kenyans have got a lot of intelligence,, you can’t tell me to vote for Raila, Kalonzo in August, after the higher cost of living… Never… #Lower food prices #” read a tweet.
“#LOWER FOOD PRICES AND FIGHT MENTAL HEALTH Kindly Mr.President Remember not everyone can afford a meal everyday. We pay Rent, buy food, transport.. Everything is all about money.its so unfortunate that You increase the cost of food with no salary increament. This is suicide,” another tweet read.
The hashtag has also attracted several politicians with some championing for the same as others come up with suggestions to solve the problem.
“I don’t think prices of Food can be lowered down as you are protesting via #lowerfoodprices until prices of farm products are lowered….i.e fertilizers, chemicals to spray, and animal Feeds…. Hapo Ndio hii language should start,” former governor Mike Sonko said.
As much as the government is being blamed for the high cost of living, DP William Ruto is carrying his own fair share of the blame.
This is after it emerged that he supported the 8% tax increase on petroleum products in 2018 saying that it would help the Jubilee government to realize its development agenda.
“The reason why the government wants tax is so that the poor gets fees though primary, electricity and road,” Ruto said while in Narok
While sharing the same information, Kitui governor Charity Ngilu accused the second in command of being a conman.
“William Samoei Ruto is the master of doublespeak and deceit. Sheer incompetence and conmanship. Utapeli Tupu!” Kitui governor Charity Ngilu said on Facebook.
“Sometime back, Ruto is on record justifying high food prices in Kenya. Why is @WilliamsRutonow pretending to care about the issue to #lowerfoodprices ??” African queen posed on Twitter.
On the other hand, DP Ruto’s allies have claimed that the cost of living rose after the handshake between president Kenyatta and ODM leader Raila Odinga.
