Kipchumba Murkomen, the Elgeyo Marakwet senator has said that he does not believe that President Uhuru Kenyatta is planning to extend his reign beyond 2022 either as the President or Prime Minister.

In a tweet on Monday, the Senate majority leader said that claims of Uhuru seeking to extend his stay in executive beyond 2022 is something that is being created by people who don’t wish well for the upcoming politicians.

Murkomen, a close ally of Deputy President William Ruto, however, pointed out that even if the President wants to extend his stay in power, it won’t work and “I won’t support”.

“I don’t believe President Kenyatta is planning to extend his reign beyond 2022 even as PM. This is a story created by those who don’t want upcoming politicians especially from Mt. Kenya to plan their future. Assuming the HE wanted it then it won’t work & I won’t support,” Murkomen said.

Ruto is not Uhuru’s employee, says Murkomen

“For a whole country to entertain a national discourse about extension of President’s reign in whatever form is just but foolishness. It’s even more brainless to anchor Constitutional change on such extension. HE Kibaki was prodded about the same. His rely: Pumbavu. Debate was closed,” he added, in another tweet.

A group of politicians, perceived to be allied to Uhuru, among them former Jubilee party vice-chairman David Murathe and COTU boss Francis Atwoli has on several occasions noted that the president was too young to retire.

With a push for the creation of Prime Minister post through the BBI, some politicians have suggested that the president would be the best person to take up the position in 2022.
