President Uhuru Kenyatta has decided to put honour to ODM Leader’s father the late Jaramogi Oginga Odinga with a state of the art facility.
Jaramogi Oginga Odinga who was the first Vice President of the founding father Mzee Jomo Kenyatta has in the past received little honour by the state but Uhuru has decided to appreciate his efforts in fighting for independence.
Uhuru Kenyatta during his tour to Kisumu county, renamed the historic Jomo Kenyatta International Sports Ground will be renamed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground.
Uhuru who is on a development tour in Kisumu county alongside ODM leader Raila Odinga made the announcement while addressing a mammoth crowd at the lakeside city on Thursday, October 22.
The field will also undergo a facelift and will serve as a recreational centre.
The president also promised to the national government will partner with Kisumu county to put up another Sports complex at the ASK Showground in Mamboleo.
The stadium is projected to cost KSh 350 million and will feature among other disciplines football, rugby, tennis and hockey pitches.
“This city will have a new international stadium at the showground. In addition, the Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium will be renamed Jaramogi Oginga Odinga Sports Ground,” said Uhuru amid thunderous cheers from the crowd.

Uhuru said the national government would inject KSh 100 million to finance the two sports projects.
The renovations, President Kenyatta also noted, were part of his pledge to improve on the standards of sports infrastructure in the country.
“I am here with my brother Raila (Odinga) to lay the foundation stone. The contractor has assured me that the venue will be ready in April (next year). So we will come back to open it with a football match involving Gor Mahia and our brothers from Ingoo (AFC Leopards). I am asking Lusaka to go and prepare his team,” said Kenyatta, amid cheers from the crowd.

The President also asked Interior CS Fred Mataing’i to ensure that the road leading to the stadium is tarmacked and street lights fixed.
Sports CS Amina Mohammed who accompanied the president noted the sports complex would be constructed within six months and would be named Jomo Kenyatta International Stadium. It is projected to have a capacity of 30,000 people.
Kisumu Governor Anyang Nyong’o said the two facilities were being constructed in honour of the country’s founding fathers; Jomo Kenyatta and the first Vice President, Jaramogi Oginga Odinga.
