At least two people have been confirmed dead in the tragic accident that involved a bus from Tahmeed company and a fuel tanker.
The bus that was bound for Mombasa before it collided head on with the oncoming petrol tanker and burst into flames.
The horrifying incident along Busia-Bumala road, near Mundika High School, a few minutes past 1 pm on Friday.
Witnesses said that they spotted at least two bodies. 5 others who were left with injuries from the accident were rushed to Busia Referral Hospital.
Police however say that the death toll could rise.
The Kenya Read Cross and County Fire Brigade arrived at the scene to contain the fire as well as conduct a rescue mission.
Busia government Paul Otuoma has since shared his remarks on the incident saying the authorities will take action after investigations are concluded.
“As authorities investigate the cause of the accident with a view of taking action, I would like to remind drivers and other road users to always exercise caution to avoid such tragic incidents,” he said.
“At this point, I wish to extend my heartfelt condolences to the families of fellow Kenyans who have lost their lives in this tragic road accident in Busia County and wish those in hospital quick recovery,” Otuoma said.
Okiya Omtatah, the senator of Busia, on his side shared his condolences with the families that lost their loved ones.
“It is with shock and disbelief that I have received the sad news of the tragic road accident between an oil tanker and a PSV bus bound for Mombasa in the Mundika area. I extend my deepest condolences to the families and friends. My thoughts are now with the victims and their families,” he said.
The incident has left Kenyans concerned over the frequent incidents involving Tahmeed buses, with another recent case being on February 4, where one of the buses burst into flames in Malindi with 48 passengers on board.
The passengers were safely evacuated.
