Two male children aged 13 and 5 burns to death in Gachagi slum in Thika, after mother locked them in the house to go drink alcohol, area chief Joephat Waithaka said.
It is said a lit candle caused the fire that caused the death of the two brothers – Mwangi and Gibson Gatere.
“The children’s mother, Mary Wanjiru, had locked them in the house Friday night and left for binge drinking,” Chief Waithaka said.
The Chief further stated that when the fire broke out, neighbors tried to rescue the brothers, but they collapsed and died right at the doorstep “shortly after the entry point was brought down by neighbors”.

The chief said when neighbours located the children’s mother, Wanjiku to inform her of the incident, they found her “too drunk to understand anything”.
Their mother was taken to Thika police post where she is waiting to be arraigned for causing the death of her children by negligence.
The brothers’ bodies were taken to General Kago Funeral Home.
