Teachers Service Commission (TSC) has transferred teachers from a school in Kakamega county, whose community was captured frog marching the headteacher over poor results in 2023 KCSE exams.
According to Kenya Union of Post-Primary Education Teachers (KUPPET) in Kakamega Johnstone Wabuti, 17 teachers who were attached to St. Gabriel Isongo secondary school in Mumias East Constituency have since been issued with transfer letters and will be joining nearby schools.
Wabuti faulted the community for failing to follow the law by storming into the school.
179 candidates sat for last year’s exam in the school . The leading student got a B. There was also a single B-, 8Cs, 12C-s, 24D+s, 46Ds, 79D-s and 4 Es
In a video that was widely shared online, the community, together with students and boda boda riders protested the poor results by forcibly evicting the head teacher from the school.
Some were captured manhandling the principal, who escaped the scene by hopping onto a boda boda ride.
The incident was widely criticized with some Kenyans noting that it takes collective efforts from parents, teachers and students for a school to perform well in national exams .
Mumias East MP Peter Salasya also condemned the incident.
KUPPET on the other hand called for the prosecution of parents who harassed the affected teachers over poor results.
“Those parents who raided the school, and took the headteacher should be arrested. We have to ensure that our teachers are safe before any teacher sets foot in that school. If parents don’t want the principal and DOS, it means that they don’t want any teacher,” Wabuti said last week.
