The National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi is facing opposition and it seems that his remaining time in office is going to be hectic.
The center of his tribulations is his decision to join DP William Ruto-Led coalition, Kenya Kwanza, and agreeing to support his presidential candidature.
Last week Tuesday saw Muturi’s Democratic party sign a coalition agreement together with 10 other parties under the Kenya Kwanza umbrella.
“I am joining Kenya Kwanza because I believe in it. In fact, I was the pioneer of the name Kenya Kwanza. We sympathize with our friends who are experiencing political constipation,” he said after joining Ruto’s camp last Saturday.
Due to his decision, MPs allied to the Azimio la Umoja Movement are pressuring him to resign because they are now doubting his impartiality during proceedings in the National Assembly.
The speaker was however adamant that he was not going to resign since it was his right to join any political formation. With regards to impeachment, there was no offense outlined in the constitution that he had committed.
He now has to brace himself for tough times ahead after a number of Kenyans on social media decided to fight him further.
According to a few comments sampled on Twitter, Muturi’s predecessor, Kenneth Marende, was far much better and they are missing the good and mature debates that were conducted in the 10th parliament and that he was full of wisdom.
Others said that Muturi had made the August house lose its glory while preferring Marende to be the speaker after the August general elections.
“Marende should come back to Speakership in September and redeem the August House’s degraded glorious stature perfected by one Justin Muturi,” a twitter user said.
“@SpeakerJBMuturihas made@NAssemblyKElike a village drinking dane. This parliament has failed terribly due to lack of leadership..As a Kenyan I miss Marende so much debates were live with charisma and energetic not now with this drankard man like@SpeakerJBMuturi,” Mukanzi Albert said.
“Not just Kenneth Marende, but the 10th parliament was probably the best, most democratic, and mature legislature that we shall ever witness for so long,” read another comment.
Muturi was elected as speaker after defeating Marende in two rounds in 2013. He was re-elected in 2017.
Marende is however seeking to become the governor of Vihiga county under a DAP-K ticket.
