Top KCSE 2020 Performer Resolves To Dishwashing In A Bid To Raise College Fees

Date:

A 19-year old girl who scored an A- in the Kenya Certificate of Secondary Education (KCSE) 2020 has resolved to do menial jobs in a bid to raise her college fees.

Jemimah Khayeye from Kitale, Transnzoia county was called to join the Technical University of Mombasa so as to pursue a Bachelor of Technology in Medical Laboratory Sciences.

Khayeye however did not join the institution since her parents cannot afford to pay for her tuition fees as well as provide her with money for upkeep.

“I was called to TUM due to financial problems, my family has not been able to take me there,” Jemimah said in an interview with KTN.

She has now resolved to washing utensils for people and splitting firewood as well as doing other small jobs to boost her parents’ little income.

Her father, Vincent Jomba, works as a caretaker while her mother does casual jobs despite being sick.

“I have been trying my best to look for money to raise the fees but the money I make is just not enough,” her father stated.

Khayeye’s mother was forced to quit her house keeping job due to harsh working conditions. She said that she only earned Ksh1,000 a week and had to walk to and from her place of work.

She added that the money was too little and was only used to meet daily expenses.

Jemimah is among the many top performing students who risk losing chances of joining universities and colleges due to lack of fees.

Kevin Otieno, who also scores an A-minus almost missed out on an opportunity to pursue a degree in medicine but he was lucky after his fees was paid by well-wishers and also some of the lecturers from Moi University.
